Residents will have access to potentially life-saving health screenings next week at the Santa Catalina Branch Library—no appointment, insurance, or identification required.

Huntington Health will offer free health counseling and screenings for hypertension and diabetes on Monday, September 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A registered nurse will provide guidance and conduct the screenings as part of the health system’s community outreach efforts.

The screening is open to adults, adults 50 and older, and emerging adults ages 18 to 24. Those interested in diabetes screening must fast for a minimum of two hours beforehand, as fasting blood glucose levels of 126 mg/dL or higher indicate diabetes, while levels between 100 and 125 mg/dL indicate prediabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.

The Santa Catalina Branch Library, which has served the community since 1913 and moved to its current building in 1931, will host this accessible health initiative. The library offers accessibility accommodations for those who need them, though at least 72 hours advance notice is required.

The health screenings represent a continuation of community service that both institutions have provided for more than a century. The Santa Catalina Branch Library has been serving in Pasadena since 1913, while the healthcare provider traces its roots to Pasadena Hospital, founded in 1892. The hospital became Huntington Hospital during the 1930s following a gift from the Henry E. Huntington estate.

“Free Health Screening” will run on Monday, September 8 at 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Santa Catalina Branch Library, 999 East Washington Blvd., in Pasadena.
