From London, Tim Albert Discusses His Greyhound Bus Adventure to Pasadena in Pasadena Senior Center Show

Published on Dec 3, 2020

Join the Pasadena Senior Center for “Author Talk,” a virtual zoom meeting with authors to discuss their most recent works.

On Thursday, December 3, 10:30 am, retired British journalist and author Tim Albert joins the Pasadena Senior Center from London to discuss his new book, “Two Summers: Nixon and Trump by Greyhound Bus,” which includes a memorable trip to Pasadena.

In 1969, Albert was 22 years old when he spent three happy months traveling 12,000 miles around the United States on Greyhound buses. Half a century later – to the day – he revisits his trip, and publishes this 30,000-word diary.

“I kept asking those I met whether they felt optimistic about the future,” he writes. “There was always a pause. Then came a range of answers, from the student of political science who said, ‘I think we’re going to be the best,’ to the caution from the Pasadena police chief: ‘We want to make sure we’re not living through the last days of the Roman Republic.’”

“It is a story of abandoned landmarks, rampant technology, clashing cultures – and individual acts of hospitality and kindness,” Albert continues.

Albert was born in 1947 and grew up in Wimbledon. He went to boarding school on a hilltop in Berkshire and then worked everything out by studying psychology and sociology at Surrey University.

In the 1970s I trained as a journalist in Tavistock and moved to London to start working on national newspapers, specialising in education. In the 1980s, he became a medical journalist.

In 1990, he started training health professionals in the art of writing and editing.

He now spends his time living with wife Barbara in Leatherhead, where he continues to write, cultivate his garden, and photograph.

The author will discuss his experiences during his Greyhound bus trips in this free event on Zoom Thursday. Registration is required.
