Ten French language enthusiasts will gather at Union Street French Café next week to debate whether a wartime resistance drama, a celebrity agent comedy, and a gentleman thief thriller represent the best of contemporary French television—entirely in French.
The Alliance Française de Pasadena’s “Café Culturel: Les Séries Télévisées Françaises” transforms the Old Pasadena venue into an immersive language laboratory on Friday, Aug. 1, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., where intermediate and advanced speakers practice conversational fluency while exploring cultural literacy.
The discussion centers on three distinctive productions that have captivated international audiences. “Un Village Français,” a World War II-era drama set in occupied France, earned acclaim for historical accuracy. “Dix pour cent,” known internationally as “Call My Agent!,” offers an insider’s view of a Parisian talent agency. “Lupin,” a modern crime caper inspired by the classic Arsène Lupin character, features international locations and diverse casting.
Conducted entirely in French, the session challenges participants beyond textbook vocabulary into nuanced cultural analysis.
Participants receive curated video clips and discussion prompts via email one week prior.
The $5 admission is free for Alliance Française members, with registration limited to 10 participants at the accessible venue with nearby street parking.
