Home of the Week: The Historic Chandler Estate on the Market for $12.8 million

Published on Aug 22, 2020

Estate shoppers can pick up a bit of Southland history along with an English country house as 1200 S. Arroyo Blvd. goes on the block on the leafy edge of Pasadena, catty corner to the San Pascual Stables.

The seven-bedroom, 10-bath property on 3.5 acres, asking $12.8 million, was once home to Philip Chandler, one of eight children of the late publisher Harry Chandler, who helped transform the Los Angeles Times into the West’s most influential newspaper. Ergo, the property’s nickname: the Chandler Estate. It was also the setting for a bridal garden party for Herbert Hoover’s granddaughter.

Notably, it was the site of the 2014 Pasadena Showcase House of Design, where it was remodeled top to bottom by a curated team of interior designers.

The 8,200-square-foot Tudor home was designed by Stiles O. Clements (whose Art Deco projects include the El Capitan Theater Building) and constructed in 1915 for prominent mining engineer and Yale grad Robert Flint and his wife, Margaret. At the time, the estate cost $28,000 (still a steal in 2020 dollars) and had 17 rooms, which were later reconfigured into seven large bedrooms, including a nursery. The property boasts huge rooms with high ceilings, five fireplaces and redwood wall paneling.

Outside there’s a carriage house with living quarters, a pool, spa, outdoor kitchen, fire pit, tennis pavilion, spring house, rose garden, sports court, water well and covered parking for five cars. Also enhancing the grounds are manicured lawns, mature trees, a lily pond, patios and a tea garden.

The home is currently owned by Chinese billionaire Huang Kangjing, who owns one of the top real estate construction firms in Shenzhen. Huang bought it sight unseen for his son, then a USC student, in 2012, paying $5.8 million in cash.

The listing is held by Scott James and Christian Stillmark of Douglas Elliman.
