Did you know that more species of birds have been seen in San Diego County than in any other county in the United States?

Join the Pasadena Senior Center at 2 p.m. Thursday to learn more about the different types of birds inhabiting San Diego County and the rest of Southern California.

San Diego has natural zones that range from estuaries and chaparral to mountains and deserts, and each has its own collection of unique bird species.

In his “Birds of San Diego County and Southern California” presentation, Dr. Philip Pryde, professor emeritus of environmental policy at San Diego State University, will acquaint people with many of the more common species to be found in the region.

Pryde has birded on all seven continents and has served on the board of the San Diego Audubon Society from 1980 to 2014. He has been its president and conservation chair, and chair of the committee responsible for the society’s 780-acre Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary.

Pryde taught courses in environmental policy at SDSU for 32 years. His specialties were water resources, energy resources, land use planning, and environmental impact analysis. In recent years, he was a frequent lecturer on the possible effects of global climate change in the San Diego area.

While at SDSU, he authored six books and more than 100 published papers. He was also a Fulbright Research Scholar and is the recipient of a national distinguished teaching award.

In the community, he has served as chair of the San Diego County Planning Commission and on the board of directors of the San Diego County Water Authority. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the San Diego River Park Foundation and the Anza-Borrego Foundation.

Pryde’s local conservation work has twice been written up in the national magazine of the National Audubon Society. He is the editor and primary author of “San Diego: An Introduction to the Region,” now in its revised fifth edition.
