Mariposa Junction Night Market Returns for Third Year in Altadena

Community event features local vendors, food trucks, and live entertainment on first Saturdays through October

The Mariposa Junction Night Market is returning for its third year in Altadena, offering a vibrant evening of community gathering and local commerce.

The event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, 5 to 9 p.m. at 849 E. Mariposa Street, organizers said. Joey Galloway, co-founder of the Night Market at Mariposa Junction, described it as basically “a family event” featuring up to 27 vendors selling goods and wares.

“We have up to 27 vendors selling goods and wares such as blankets, soaps, lotions, things like that. We also have five food vendors on average, a variety of trucks and food stamps, and we also offer live entertainment,” Galloway said in an interview.

The night market aims to create a safe space for people to come out and bring their children, according to Galloway, who noted the event includes a dedicated kid zone. Attendees can expect an eclectic mix of vendors, prepared foods, and a beer and wine garden, all enhanced by live music performances throughout the evening.

About half of the vendors are local Altadena residents, Galloway said, though participation is open to any vendor from anywhere. He added that most vendors have 9-to-5 jobs and participate in the market as a side activity.

The Aug. 3 event marks the fourth night market of the year, with three more scheduled through October, Galloway explained.

“We run it the first Saturday of the month from May to October, the first Saturday of the month, 5 to 9 p.m. from May to October,” he said.

Galloway said the night market has received positive feedback since its inception, with attendance varying based on weather conditions.

The event originated in 2001 when Galloway and Stacy Whitney, then-owner of the Altadena Farmers Market, joined forces to create additional community activities in the area.

After Whitney relocated, Melissa Farwell of the California Certified Farmers Market took over co-hosting duties alongside Galloway.

“We also host a Sip and Shop at the Mariposa at Junction as well too. And that’s an annual fundraiser for the Chamber of Commerce,” Galloway said. “And that’s typically the first Saturday in December.”

With varying costs, the Mariposa Junction Night Market offers something for everyone and will continue every first Saturday through October, providing a recurring opportunity for community engagement and local business support.
