Meet Famous French Cartoonists!

Published on Nov 6, 2022

As part of the third Festival de la BD 2022 organized by Made in France, the Alliance Française de Pasadena (AFP) is hosting a team of famous French cartoonists, including Jean Bastide, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, starting at 7 p.m.

“Festival de la BD” is the Festival of the BDs, which features the best in Franco-Belgian “bandes dessinées,” or comic strips that are usually originally in French and created for readership in France and Belgium.

Bastide is the famous illustrator of the Boule et Bill series, which he took over in 2016. He was born in Aldi and studied in France before heading to Brussels, Belgium, to enroll at the Saint-Luc Art Institute in 2004. His first break in the field of comics was working with Bernard Yslaire and Vincent Mézil on the “Hugo and Iris” installments in the “La Guerre des Sambre” collection between 2005 and 2009.

He then teamed up with Robin Recht to create a trilogy based on Victor Hugo’s “Notre Dame de Paris” novel. The first book was published by Glénat in 2012, the second in 2014. In a completely different style, he made an album of “Boule et Bill,” a classic family gag comic, with writer Christophe Cazenove in 2016, when main author Laurent Verron took a break.

Bastide also serves as a colorist on several series for Glénat, Dargaud and Soleil.
