Mount Wilson Observatory to Host Sunday Concerts in Historic Telescope Dome

Unique musical series blends science and art in century-old astronomical landmark
Published on Oct 5, 2024

Mount Wilson Observatory will launch its “Concerts in the Dome” series on Sunday, Oct. 6, offering a rare blend of music and astronomy in a historic setting. The performances, curated by Artistic Director Cécilia Tsan, will take place under the vaulted dome of the observatory’s 100-inch telescope.

The telescope, famous for Edwin Hubble’s groundbreaking discoveries about the expanding universe, resides in a dome designed by Chicago architect D.H. Burnham. Observatory officials tout the dome’s acoustics as rivaling those of Europe’s great cathedrals, providing a unique backdrop for the musical performances.

Concerts will be held at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., with a reception featuring light refreshments scheduled between shows at 4 p.m. Attendees are advised to wear comfortable shoes for the 10–15-minute walk from the parking lot to the auditorium.

On Sunday, Concert in the Park will feature “Cabaret Tzigane” by Trio Dinicu, composed of Luanne Homzy, Tommy Davy, and Frank Anastasio.

Observatory officials caution visitors about the cooler mountain temperatures and recommend arriving on time, as gates close shortly after the program begins.

Also note that access to the performance level requires climbing a 53-step staircase. The venue, situated a mile high in elevation, lacks ADA-compliant access due to its facilities being over 100 years old. This may present challenges for some visitors navigating the historical site and its thinner air.

Programs vary by date. Ticket information can be found at https://www.mtwilson.edu/concerts/. The observatory encourages using their provided directions for a seamless travel experience to the mountain location.
