Musical Storytime Brings Halloween Tale to Life at Vroman’s Bookstore

Young children to experience interactive performance of 'The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything'
Published on Nov 1, 2024

Students and faculty from the Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM) will transform a beloved Halloween children’s book into an interactive performance at Vroman’s Bookstore on Saturday, Nov. 2.

The hour-long musical adaptation of Linda Williams’s “The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything” will feature activities and crafts designed for children ages three to nine.

Williams, who serves as Director of a child development center, created this story about an intrepid elderly protagonist who encounters mysterious sounds during an autumn night walk.

The performance, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Vroman’s, located at 695 E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, brings to life what School Library Journal has awarded a starred review.

The Horn Book praised the work as “a splendiferous Halloween story,” which features illustrations by Megan Lloyd, whose notable works include “Thanksgiving at the Tappletons'” and “The Mixed-Up Rooster.”

Lloyd lives on a Pennsylvania farm raising sheep, chickens, and cows, and draws inspiration from rabbits that visited her vegetable garden.

The 32-page book, published by HarperCollins in July 2019, is currently available for $9.99 and features what publishers describe as “bouncy refrains and classic art.”

School Library Journal called it “a great purchase for Halloween or any time of year,” making it suitable for classroom, library, or home reading.

PCM’s Musical Storytime is a fun and interactive program designed for young children and their caregivers. During these monthly sessions, mostly at Vroman’s Bookstore, students and faculty from the conservatory perform musical adaptations of popular children’s books, incorporating songs, dances, and interactive activities. It’s a great way for kids to experience the joy of music and storytelling while engaging in creative crafts and activities.
