Pasadena-based author, photographer, and wine expert Dr. Michael C. Higgins has released a new book that sheds light on Mexico’s lesser-known wine regions. “Exploring Wine Regions – México” offers readers an insider’s view of three distinct areas.

The 340-page book, featuring over 600 photographic images, focuses on Valle de Guadalupe, Guanajuato, and Querétaro. Higgins combines wine education with travel guidance and stunning photography to showcase these regions’ unique offerings.

Valle de Guadalupe, located in Baja California, produces nearly 90% of Mexico’s wine. The region’s viticultural history dates back to 1699, with modern production beginning in 1931 under General Abelardo L. Rodriguez. It is home to more than 120 wineries, acclaimed restaurants, and luxurious boutique accommodations.

Guanajuato, situated 6,000 feet above sea level northwest of Mexico City, has earned international recognition for its wines. The region’s wine industry began in 1987 when Ricardo Vega planted five French varietals. Today, it boasts more than 40 different wineries, mostly within driving distance of San Miguel de Allende.

Querétaro, known for its sparkling wines, started its wine journey in 1978 when Spanish Cava producer Freixenet established operations there. The region has since expanded to include red wine production and now boasts close to 30 vineyards. It is also known for its fine cheeses and incredible gastronomy.

“Higgins’ strategy is infallible,” said Dr. Maria Isabel Ramos, professor at the Universidad Anáhuac México. “He captures moments and perspectives, with an expert eye and with enough experience to show in images the best of each destination, each winery, and each vineyard.”

The book, priced at $34.95, was released this week. It is the fourth book in Higgins’ series that includes volumes on Argentina, France, and California wine regions. The book is distributed by Baker & Taylor.

Higgins, a former publisher of Flying Adventures magazine, brings over 20 years of experience to his work. His background includes a BA in Commercial Art, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration. His extensive travel informs his unique perspective on wine tourism.

With “Exploring Wine Regions – México,” Higgins aims to change perceptions about Mexican viticulture and to highlight the country’s growing reputation in the global wine industry. The book serves as both a coffee table piece and a detailed travel guide.
