The Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition is set to host its inaugural night ride of 2024 on July 27, offering cyclists a unique way to explore the city after dark.
The event, which will run from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., will begin at Pasadena Memorial Park, specifically at 85 East Holly Street, and cover a 9.2-mile route through West Pasadena.
Organizers describe the ride as “the most FUN way to beat the heat,” encouraging participants to join “the lit-up crew as we explore iconic locations and undiscovered neighborhoods in Pasadena under the stars!”
The journey will include a traverse across the Colorado Street Bridge and feature 422 feet of elevation gain. The route includes “a couple of steep bits,” according to the event description, which assures cyclists that “it’s fine to walk your bike for those parts.” This route is back by popular demand, being the same one used a year ago.
Safety measures are emphasized, with helmets required for riders under 18 and a mandatory waiver for all participants. The event listing states: “Children riding on their own should remain with parents at all times, have experience riding with a group, and be able to average 12 mph.”
Families are welcome, with the organizers noting, “Younger children and/or pets are welcome so long as they are riding safely in a trailer, on a family cargo bike, etc.” However, “No training wheels permitted” on the ride.
Participants are encouraged to arrive at Memorial Park by 7:00 p.m., with the ride commencing at 7:30 p.m. The excursion is expected to conclude around 10:00 p.m. at Dog Haus on East Green Street, where riders can “End your evening with tater tots at Dog Haus (and the beverage of your choice)!”
The coalition recommends that cyclists ensure their bikes are in good working condition and bring essential items, stating: “Recommended items to bring: Bike lights, water, a spare tube, tire levers, bike multi-tool and pump.” They also note that “A limited number of bike lights are available for loan.”
Public transit options are available for those traveling to the starting point, including Metro A / Gold Line, Foothill Transit, Metro Buses, and Pasadena Transit. Paid street parking is also an option, but participants are cautioned about local parking restrictions. The organizers provide a link for detailed parking information for Old Pasadena.
The organizers have issued a warning about potential weather-related cancellations. They state that they will send an email early Saturday morning if inclement weather is expected to impact the ride. Participants are advised to check their email for any updates.
The Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition, which said it has 352 followers on the event platform, reports that “22% of attendees are repeat customers “, suggesting a growing interest in nighttime cycling events within the community.
