The screening at 4:30 p.m. is part of “Low Key: The Magic, Wonder and Horror of Light,” a film series organized by Caltech Professor Brian R. Jacobson.
The 1931 horror, drama, and science fiction film, directed by James Whale, tells the story of Dr. Henry Frankenstein, played by Colin Clive, who attempts to create life using salvaged body parts and electricity.
Jacobson, a Professor of Visual Culture in the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences at Caltech, will provide an introduction to the film before the screening begins.
The movie, which also stars Mae Clarke and John Boles, was adapted from a 1927 play by Peggy Webling, which was itself based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel.
The film achieved significant acclaim upon its release, garnering praise from both audiences and critics, and subsequently spawned multiple sequels in the following years.
No reservations are needed for the screening, which will take place in the museum’s theater. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime. Admission is included with regular museum entry.
