In an effort to help enhance children’s reading abilities, the Pasadena Public Library is hosting a unique event that pairs young readers with furry, four-legged listeners. The “Barks & Books” program, scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., will take place at the Jefferson Branch Library, located at 1500 East Villa Street.

The initiative, presented by Love on a Leash and Pet Partners, allows children to read aloud to well-trained therapy dogs. This approach is designed to remove the anxiety some children may experience when reading aloud to adults or their peers.

According to the Pasadena Public Library, this program helps strengthen reading skills and boosts confidence in reading aloud. The event is free and open to the public, with no pre-registration required.

Sessions with therapy dogs will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, giving children the opportunity to practice their reading in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. The program aims to create a relaxed atmosphere where children can improve their literacy skills.

Love on a Leash and Pet Partners, both nonprofit organizations, specialize in providing pet therapy services. Love on a Leash focuses on increasing public awareness of pet-provided therapy, while Pet Partners aims to improve human health and well-being through therapy animal visits.

The Jefferson Branch Library, known for its focus on youth services, is part of the Growing Together Pasadena initiative. It features dedicated spaces for children and teens and houses the Office of the Young Child, making it an ideal location for this innovative reading program.
