The Pasadena Public Library is gearing up for a month-long celebration of Latino Heritage Month 2024, offering a variety of programs and events throughout September and October. The library aims to honor the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans with ancestral ties to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

“Celebrate Latino Heritage Month with the library! We have a month full of programs, events and crafts celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America,” the library announced on Facebook. The post also directed readers to an online calendar for more information.

Latino Heritage Month features a range of activities, including a Latino Heritage Preschool Storytime at the Santa Catalina Branch Library on Sept. 25. The same day, the La Pintoresca Branch will host INCA, the Peruvian Ensemble, offering a musical exploration of Latin American culture.

Families can look forward to Fiesta La Pintoresca on Oct. 2, while music enthusiasts can attend “De Colores: Celebrating Latino Diversity Through Music” with Gloria & Javier Arjona at the Lamanda Park Branch on Oct. 12. The Santa Catalina Branch will host a Community Ofrenda from Oct. 21 to Nov. 4, allowing visitors to participate in this traditional Mexican observance.

Craft enthusiasts have numerous options, including decorating paletas and creating Rabbit Alebrije Masks at the Hastings Branch starting Sept. 15. The San Rafael Branch will offer a Latino Heritage Month Pins and Buttons workshop on Sept. 17.

Other craft events include a DIY Nicho session at the Santa Catalina Branch on Sept. 21 and an Alebrije Craft workshop at the same location on Oct. 12. The Hill Avenue Branch will distribute “Pasadena Grows: Edible Flowers in Latino Cultures” kits on Sept. 23.

The library’s celebration coincides with the Latino Heritage Parade and Festival, scheduled for Oct. 5 at Pasadena City Hall. Details for this event are forthcoming.
