It’s the Juneteenth weekend. Folks will be heading out to local parks and recreational outdoor activities.

My peoples’ are having a BBQ. Another friend is starting his celebration early–with a Fish Fry on Friday.

Red cups and a cutthroat domino tournament with a waitlist. The spades game will be abruptly ended–your cheating cousin reneges–again.

A heated, but, not so serious political debate happening over in the corner near the cooler.

Everybody soaking up the sunshine while singing along to ‘joy and pain.’

And, like clockwork, two or more guests slide off. For those that know, they give the signal–-time for a session. Since Covid, the idea of puff-puff-pass has new protocols.

To each, his own is the new normal.

Naw, Brah, you gots to get your own.

This same scene will happen many times over this Juneteenth celebration weekend.

It’s the culture.

In between writing assignments, I was tasked with sampling and penning a review on a new African American-owned premium, yet affordable qht cannabis brand.

Seriously, true story.

I wrote about the brand when it first hit the shelves earlier this year.

Like to hear it, hear it go…

Octavius Master of Buds was founded by Craig Washington in 2021. According to their website, Washington is “setting a new standard for the modern cannabis retail (industry), that is inclusive, diverse and approachable.”

Washington’s venture into the space is one example of the intentionality of a majority white owned corporate and highly capitalized enterprise–being mindful of unlocking opportunity for aspiring BIPOC businesses–a group, due to exorbitantly high startup cost and regulations– have been locked out.

Octavius Master of Buds is a featured brand throughout Sweet Flower stores. Washington said in an interview last Friday, “Sweet Flower has taken the lead. Other dispensaries [in Pasadena] have not embraced social equity, they have continued to do business in the same traditional ways of the majority running, owning and taking advantage of all the opportunities in the industry.”

I sampled three of their products. Whether you’re a casual or regularly enjoy burning one, here are some basics you should know before choosing between  Sativa, Hybrid, or Indica. According to Healthline.com, “not all cannabis is created equal. Different strains of cannabis produce different effects.”

Indica, which originates from the Hindu Kush mountains of India, is believed to have a relaxing effect on the user. Sativa has a more energizing effect, while the hybrid is a combination of the two.

My preference is Indica. I prefer a more relaxed vibe. It’s a good balancer to my otherwise hyper personality. Grrranimals hit smoothly and did not come on too heavy. It’s a great price for the THC percentage.

Hybrids are hit or miss with. They’re usually dominant with one strain versus the other. But, I found the Gushers a pleasant blend. It was the most even hybrid strain I’ve enjoyed in a long time.

I was blown away by the sativa. I almost never smoke sativa. It tends to make me too hyper and goofy. Sativa smokers are the people that say weed makes them paranoid. I didn’t have this experience with the Strawburlee. It did sneak up on me. It was a perfect pairing with Kat Williams latest Nexflix comedy special.

The gold metallic packaging is sleek and has the distinct appearance of a high-end brand. The pre rolls come with two .75g joints in a tube container. This allows for you to preserve the freshness and portability. Think grab and go. The container tubes also are an added convenience. No need to break out the grinder or wonder if you remembered rolling papers. Depending on your skills, you’ll save 5 to 10 minutes rolling a yam-looking joint. Perfect solution for token on the go. Just enough to get on your desired level.
