Contemporary dance reinterpretation of “Hansel and Gretel” explores trauma and transformation through avant-garde theatrical elements

Rosanna Gamson/World Wide will bring their innovative reinterpretation of “Hansel and Gretel” to the Sierra Madre Playhouse on June 28. “Sugar Houses” combines contemporary dance with avant-garde theatrical elements to explore the enduring psychological terrain of trauma, survival, and transformation through minimalist choreography and a stripped-down set.

“It’s up to the performers to be able to do anything, and to make the world out of nothing in the service of the work,” stated choreographer Rosanna Gamson, highlighting the production’s approach to storytelling through movement and visual art.

The performance features a multigenre format that includes singing, dancing, storytelling, and a live soundscape. Audiences will experience unique visual elements including chalk-drawn sets created during the performance and hand-held lighting that contribute to the immersive nature of the production.

The production blends languages including German, Yiddish, and Turkish, developed in collaboration with linguist Brian Evenson. “Sugar Houses” challenges viewers to reconsider the classic fairy tale through an adult lens, examining how early experiences of abandonment, resource scarcity, and courage remain embedded in collective memory. The production invites personal interpretation, dialogue, and contemplation, making each performance a unique reflective experience.

The project is supported by the NEFA National Dance Project, Doris Duke Foundation, and Mellon Foundation, underscoring its artistic significance and innovative approach to performance art.

Cast members include Kayla Gabrielle Aguila, Brance Souza, Mallory Fabian, Dave X, Clementine Gamson Levy, and Terry Wayne Jr.

The performance will take place on Saturday, June 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. Ticket prices range from $12 to $35.
