Scott Kahn, a prominent artist known for his visual diary approach to painting, is set to deliver a lecture at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena on Tuesday, Oct. 8, as part of the Fall 2024 Graduate Art guest lecture series.

Kahn’s presentation will take place at 7 p.m. in the Los Angeles Times Media Center on the college’s Hillside Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. No RSVPs are required.

The artist, born in 1946, currently resides and works in New Rochelle, New York. Kahn received his Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University and has exhibited his work in solo shows at prestigious galleries and museums worldwide.

Recent solo exhibitions include Almine Rech, Upper East Side, New York (2022), Consortium Museum, Dijon, France (2023), and Art Basel Hong Kong (2021). Kahn has also shown at New York City’s ATM Gallery, Harper’s Apartment, and Harper’s Books in Easthampton, L.I.

Kahn’s artistic philosophy centers on creating a visual record of his life experiences. “Scott considers his work to be a visual diary, a record of his life, a reporting of the places and people he encounters,” the ArtCenter said in its announcement. “If he does not feel compelled to work, how can he expect the viewer to respond to what he is reporting?”

Kahn aims for his paintings to possess depth, poetry, and honesty with a direct and clear effect. He believes that the creative process reveals an artist’s identity and relationship to life.

The lecture series, organized by Kelly Akashi, features a diverse lineup of internationally recognized artists, critics, and art historians. It serves as a forum for dialogue between graduate students, the ArtCenter community, and the public.

ArtCenter’s Graduate Art program is known for its intensive studio practice and rigorous academic coursework. The program boasts a low faculty-to-student ratio, providing students with personalized attention to refine their artistic skills.

Faculty and students work in various genres including film, video, photography, painting, sculpture, performance, and installation. A significant number of alumni have achieved national and international acclaim and often return as visiting faculty and guest lecturers.

Support for the series comes from various donors, including Jack Shear, Brenda R. Potter, Brendan Dugan, Lisson Gallery, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Sprüth Magers, BLUM, Alan Hergott, and David Kordansky. The lecture series typically takes place on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the L.A. Times Auditorium.
