Pasadena radio station KPCC 89.3 is hosting a live taping of LAist Studios’ “Retake” podcast, featuring a screening of “Stranger at the Gate” on Thursday, Nov. 10, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Crawford Family Forum.
Following the screening, “Retake” host John Horn will welcome director Joshua Seftel and cast members Bibi Bahrami and Richard “Mac” McKinney for a conversation about the film and its impact.
“Stranger at the Gate” is a new documentary from director Seftel’s Emmy-nominated series of short films challenging people to rethink their assumptions and misconceptions about Muslims. The film recently won the Documentary Grand Prize at the Heartland Film Indy Shorts International Film Festival, officially qualifying it for Oscar consideration, and the Best Documentary Short at the Tribeca Film Festival.
“Stranger at the Gate” deals with U.S. Marine Mac McKinney, the “stranger” in the story, who after 25 years of service returns home to Indiana filled with an all-consuming rage toward the people he had been fighting against. Still fueled by his desire to fight for his country, he plans to bomb the local mosque. But when he comes face to face with the community of Afghan refugees and others of Muslim faith that he seeks to kill, his plan takes an unexpected turn.
The film includes interviews from not just McKinney but his ex-wife as well.
