U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, has named 13 Kaiser Permanente Southern California hospitals as 2025 High Performing medical centers for Maternity Care.

Kaiser Permanente Southern California is based in Pasadena.

This is the highest award a hospital can earn as part of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care annual study.

Los Angeles, West Los Angeles, Panorama City, Baldwin Park, Downey, South Bay, Fontana, Ontario, Riverside, Anaheim, Irvine, San Diego and Zion medical centers earned a “High Performing” designation in recognition of maternity care as measured by several factors. They included severe unexpected newborn complication rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.

“The hospitals recognized by U.S. News as Best Hospitals for Maternity Care showcase exceptional care for expectant parents,” said Jennifer Winston, a health data scientist at U.S. News. “These hospitals demonstrate significantly lower C-section rates and severe unexpected newborn complications compared to hospitals not recognized by U.S. News.”

U.S. News began evaluating maternity care hospitals in 2021, rating hospitals that provide labor and delivery services and submit detailed data to the publication for analysis. Best Hospitals for Maternity Care assists expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care teams, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity services that best meets their family’s needs.

U.S. News evaluated 817 hospitals from across the United States. Only half of all hospitals evaluated for U.S. News’ 2025 ratings edition were recognized as Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.

“We’re delighted that so many Kaiser Permanente Southern California hospitals have been recognized for their excellence in delivering high-quality maternity care,” said Michelle Gaskill-Hames, president of Kaiser Permanente Southern California/Hawaii, Health Plan and Hospitals. “It’s a testament to our commitment to providing expectant mothers with the world-class and compassionate care they expect to receive at Kaiser Permanente hospitals.”

Dr. Ramin Davidoff, executive medical director and chair for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, and chair and CEO for the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, said this accolade was achieved in large part by the medical excellence provided by Kaiser Permanente physicians and staff.

“Our physicians and care teams go above and beyond every day so that our patients’ individual needs are being met to ensure good health and safe deliveries,” he said. “We’re committed that expectant mothers will receive the excellent care they want and expect for themselves and their babies.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, severe unexpected newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, birthing-friendly practices and reporting on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.
