“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” edged out “The Garfield Movie” with $25.5 million at the North American box office this weekend, the lowest total for a top-grossing film on Memorial Day weekend since 1995, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
A prequel to 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Furiosa” stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, with Taylor-Joy playing a younger version of the character played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 film. It is the fifth film in the action-heavy franchise that began with 1979’s “Mad Max,” all directed by Australian George Miller.
“The Garfield Movie,” an animated comedy based on the popular comic strip created by Jim Davis, stars Chris Pratt as the voice of Garfield. It opened with $24.7 million Friday through Sunday, Comscore reported. When Monday’s holiday numbers are added to the weekend totals, “The Garfield Movie” might pass “Furiosa” and wind up in first place for the four-day weekend.
Director John Krasinski’s fantasy film “IF” slipped to third place one week after opening in first place, grossing $16.1 million Friday through Sunday, Comscore reported.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” was fourth with $13.4 million in its third week, followed by “The Fall Guy” with $5.9 million in its fourth weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “The Strangers: Chapter 1” ($5.6 million), “Sight” ($2.69 million), “Challengers” ($1.38 million), “Babes” ($1.06 million) and “Back to Black” ($1.05 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $101 million. The year-to-date total is $2.559 billion — down 22% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
