“Sinners” grossed $45 million in its second weekend, nearly matching its opening weekend total and once again leading all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Director Ryan Coogler’s horror film is a period piece with musical and vampire themes set in the Mississippi Delta in 1932, and stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers.
A 20th anniversary re-release of George Lucas’ “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” took second place with $25.2 million, Comscore reported.
Third place went to “The Accountant 2,” a thriller starring Ben Affleck, which opened with $24.5 million.
“A Minecraft Movie” was fourth with $22.7 million Friday through Sunday in its fourth week, followed by the horror film “Until Dawn,” which opened with $8 million.
Sixth place went to “The King of Kings,” an animated, faith-based offering from Angel Studios that took in $4 million in its third weekend in theaters.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “The Amateur” ($3.8 million), “Warfare” ($2.65 million), “Pink Floyd at Pompeii — MCMLXXII” ($2.62 million) and “The Legend of Ochi” ($1.4 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $146.5 million. The year-to-date total is $2.281 billion — up 11% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
