“The Invitation” was the top-grossing film in a slow weekend at the box office, opening with $7 million, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Sony’s horror/mystery film out-grossed “Bullet Train,” which made $5.6 million Friday through Sunday in its fourth week in theaters, Comscore reported.
The thriller “Beast” was third with $4.9 million in its second week.
“Top Gun: Maverick” was fourth with $4.7 million in its 14th week in theaters in the United States and Canada. The sequel starring Tom Cruise has grossed $691 million domestically, the sixth-highest total in movie history.
“Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” was fifth with $4.5 million, one week after opening in first place with over $20 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “DC League of Super-Pets” ($4.2 million), “Three Thousand Years of Longing” ($2.8 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($2.74 million), “Thor: Love and Thunder” ($2.7 million) and “Where the Crawdads Sing” ($2.3 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office total was estimated at $52.7 million, the lowest total of the summer. The year-to-date total is up to $5.321 billion — an increase of 161% over 2021’s figure, according to Comscore.
