When Doctor Meets Space Engineer: Medical Graduate Leads Colony Design Workshop

NASA ambassador who recently earned medical degree will guide families through designing space habitats at library in Pasadena

What happens when someone trained to sustain human life on Earth turns their attention to keeping people alive on Mars? This Saturday, Isobel Tweedt will find out.

The recently minted doctor, who graduated with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in May, will trade her medical training for space engineering as she guides families through designing colonies for distant planets.

As a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador, Tweedt will lead the “Build a Space Colony” workshop Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Hill Avenue Branch Library in Pasadena. The program challenges participants of all ages to design model settlements that provide air, food, radiation shielding, and power generation — the basic requirements for human survival beyond Earth.

The hands-on workshop addresses the fundamental obstacles space explorers face when establishing new planetary settlements.

Attendees will work through the engineering and logistical challenges of creating sustainable habitats in hostile environments.

The Hill Avenue Branch Library, a 4,752-square-foot facility housing 32,109 items, offers 11 parking spaces for attendees.

Those requiring accessibility accommodations should contact the library at least 72 hours in advance to ensure availability.

Build a Space Colony will run on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Hill Avenue Branch Library, 55 South Hill Ave, Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 744-7264 or visit https://www.cityofpasadena.net/library/calendar/?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D187845590
