Mom and puppies are doing just fine.

Fourteen new mixed collie puppies landed in new homes this past week, through perhaps not in the way they might have preferred. The new puppies were part of three litters born to three separate collies who were found deserted on the street in Pasadena.

According to Pasadena Humane Society Communications Associate Jamie Holeman, the border collies were assumed to be dumped by the same person over the last two weeks.

“These collies were found on the street in the area near Caltech as well as in the area around Hastings Ranch,” She said. She also noted that while they couldn’t be sure, the dogs, who appeared to be approximately a year old, looked similar, and seemed to be related. All of the pregnant collies were found by Good Samaritans, who called the Humane Society, said Holeman.

The wandering pregnant collies were only days from giving birth, said Holemna, who also reported that they were placed with foster families who will care for them in their homes until the puppies are old enough for formal adoption, in approximately two months..

While this type of dumping is not unusual, Holeman said that case stood out because the dogs “were very, very pregnant, when they were dumped on the street and all three dogs gave birth within just a few days after being found.”

Though the situation was dire at the time, Holeman said the new puppies will all find homes, as well as the mother dogs.

“We just really want to urge members of the community that if you are unable to care for your pets, please don’t abandon them in the street,” she added. “It’s dangerous for the dogs, and it’s cruel.” She advised instead for pet owners to contact their local Humane Society,

“Just, please, please don’t abandon your pets,” said Holeman.
