UCLA freshman Kyle An went wire-to-wire to win the 87th Pasadena City Men’s Golf Championship last weekend, successfully defending his title.
The annual Tournament is sponsored by the Brookside Men’s Golf Club. It has a rich history, dating back to 1929.
The Tournament is an amateur event open to all male golfers with a USGA handicap index of 2.8 or lower. This year it featured a full field of 340 players.
The course was wet on the first day after over 4 inches of rain fell in the preceding three days in what has been a historically wet season in Southern California. Fortunately, the Tournament was played on three successive dry, mostly sunny albeit cool days.
Players contended with unusually low temperatures and high afternoon winds each day. On Sunday, only one player in the field, runner-up Mitchell Fedorka, was able to match par.
With high winds, fast greens and deep rough on the last day, the famous CW Koiner course was an extraordinary challenge. In the end, An persevered with a 75 to finish the 54 holes at one under par, two shots ahead of Fedorka.
Ryan Kyaw finished third at 2 over, while Jesse Arian and Scotland Schmidt tied for fourth at 5 over par.
Eight-time champion Tim Hogarth, 56, finished 19th.
An plays golf on the UCLA Bruins golf team. He won the 2022 Pasadena City Championship Golf Tournament after forcing a playoff with a birdie at 18 and then making par from the greenside, according to AmateurGolf.com.
The three-day tournament raised funds benefiting The First Tee of Greater Pasadena. The First Tee is a nonprofit organization that provides golf instruction and life skills education to children from low-income families.
Master Executive Director of First Tee – Greater Pasadena Bob Baderian told Pasadena Now he wished “to acknowledge the fantastic support and numerous volunteer hours provided by the Brookside Men’s Club in making this year’s Pasadena City Championship one of the most successful events ever. I also want to acknowledge the great support provided by Rose Bowl Operating Company and American Golf.”
