College Access Plan Receives Funding to Help Pasadena Students Complete Financial Aid Forms

College Access Plan (CAP), a Pasadena-based nonprofit that provides free college readiness services to students and graduates of the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD), has received funding from Educational Credit Management Corporation through the U.S. Department of Education’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Student Support Strategy project to help local students complete the application process for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The funding aims to ensure all students in the community submit the FAFSA before Sept. 1. Serious issues with the rollout of the new FAFSA system this year caused California to extend the deadline for four-year college students to receive state grants to May 2, and the extended deadline for community college-going students to Sept. 2.

Despite the extensions, many students have still not submitted their forms or have encountered system glitches that prevented their applications from registering as complete. To address this, CAP will train 10 Financial Aid Advocates to spread awareness through community events, social media, targeted email communication, and texting.

CAP staff will also provide free group and individual expert support to help students complete their financial aid applications. In August, CAP and PUSD will partner to offer two FAFSA completion events, one in English and one in Spanish. The focus of these efforts is geared toward recent graduates of PUSD.

“We are well aware that the botched roll out of the new FAFSA has left students and families confused and frustrated, and the effects are most pronounced for first generation college goers,” said Mo Hyman, CAP Executive Director. “CAP is eager to help spread the message that college is an accessible and affordable option for anyone who wishes to pursue a postsecondary degree or certificate.”

Founded in 2006, CAP is an independent 501c3 nonprofit that prepares underserved and underrepresented students to succeed in college. Through partnerships with area school Districts and local agencies, CAP provides no-cost college readiness advice and topic-specific courses for high school and middle school students, families, and to graduates that attend college. The organization has 18 years of experience partnering with PUSD to remove barriers to college affordability for students.
