Pasadena City College Celebrates Lowrider Culture With Campus Event Thursday

Pasadena City College (PCC) is embracing car culture as part of its Latine Heritage Month and Centennial Celebration. The college will host “Cruising PCC: Celebrating Lowrider Culture” on Thursday, Oct. 10, offering students and visitors a chance to explore the rich history of Mexican American and Chicanx car culture.

“This event is the community’s chance to interact with cars and their owners, learn about their histories with their cars, see the love and passion they have poured into them, and understand how they have tied their love of lowriders to their own sense of community,” the college said in an announcement.

The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on PCC’s Colorado Campus at 1570 E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena.

Highlights include a showcase of Lady Lowriders, a Pasadena-based women’s only car club, and a photography exhibit documenting Los Angeles Latine culture and lowriders.

Attendees can enjoy cold agua fresca and sample candies from across Latin and Central America at a dedicated candy station.

The day will begin with a Faculty & Staff Car Show in Lot 3 at 10 a.m., followed by the main car showcase and photography exhibit in the Quad at noon.

The event will culminate in a panel discussion titled “Identity Intersections with Car Culture” at 2:30 p.m. in the Creveling Lounge. The talk will feature Lady Lowriders members and PCC faculty, moderated by Alex Murillo. The discussion aims to explore “the intersections of lowriding with multiple racial and ethnic groups and the intentional reclaiming of the narrative around cruising to center community, family, history, and cultural pride.”
