In response to increasing national pressures facing the transgender community, All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena is adapting its annual Transgender Day of Remembrance observance with separate spaces for transgender people and their allies.

The church’s Sunday service on Nov. 17 will feature dedicated areas for both groups during the memorial service and subsequent dinner discussions at 132 N. Euclid Ave.

“We are increasingly aware of the heightened political, legal, and social pressures that impact transgender individuals, and our program has evolved to reflect both solidarity and proactive support,” said Thomas Diaz, Director of Connection & Care at All Saints Church.

The specialized format marks a noteworthy change in the church’s fifth annual observance since its first one 2023, building upon their established history of transgender advocacy and community support.

“Transgender individuals often experience a deep and personal resonance with TDOR, as it honors those lost to violence and transphobia,” Diaz explained. “A dedicated space allows for a more intimate, affirming, and healing experience, free from the need to educate or explain.”

The church’s involvement in transgender advocacy includes their contribution to “Voices of Witness: Out of the Box,” a documentary highlighting transgender people of faith.

All Saints maintains year-round initiatives including support groups, public advocacy efforts, educational programs, pastoral care services, and creation of an inclusive spiritual environment for the transgender community.

“For the Pasadena community, we hope TDOR sends a message of both remembrance and action – that honoring lives lost must compel us toward justice,” Diaz said.

The memorial service begins at 5 p.m. and represents the church’s ongoing commitment to combining traditional remembrance with addressing contemporary social justice challenges.
