Alhambra City Councilwoman Sasha Renée Pérez has received an endorsement from the California LGBTQ Legislative Caucus for her California State Senate District 25 campaign.
Renée Pérez is running against Pasadena resident John Harabedian for the seat.
“As Alhambra’s first openly bisexual Mayor and the California Democratic Party’s LGBTQ Caucus Co-Chair, Sasha Renée Pérez has a proven track record of fighting for equal rights and visibility for our community. We are in a state of emergency for LGBTQIA+ Americans, and our State Legislature needs vocal and unapologetic leadership to support inclusion and justice. We wholeheartedly endorse Councilwoman Sasha Renée Pérez for State Senate,” said Caucus Chair Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman and Caucus Vice Chair Assemblymember Chris Ward.
The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus was established in 2002 to create a forum for legislators to discuss issues that impact LGBTQ Californians and to further the goal of equality and justice.
In December 2022, California became the first in the nation to achieve 10% representation in its state legislature.
“I am honored to be endorsed by the California LGBTQ Legislative Caucus and excited for the opportunity to be elected as the first openly bisexual State Senator. At a time when we see increased violent attacks targeting queer communities, California needs to continue leading. I look forward to joining the California LGBTQ Legislative Caucus and helping advocate for equal rights for all,” said Councilwoman Pérez.
Councilwoman Pérez launched her campaign in February 2023 and has earned several major endorsements, including Pasadena Councilmember Jess Rivas.
The open seat includes the communities of Pasadena, Altadena, Glendale, Alhambra, Arcadia, Claremont, Glendora, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta-Montrose, Monrovia, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, Temple City, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, and San Antonio Heights.
In 2020, Pérez was elected to Alhambra City Council and sworn in as Mayor, making her the youngest female Mayor in San Gabriel Valley history and the youngest Latina mayor in California history to lead a city of more than 50,000. She immediately made an impact by helping Alhambra residents and businesses navigate the COVID-19 pandemic — capping third-party food delivery fees and delivering HERO pay to local grocery, pharmacy store, and city workers. Councilwoman Pérez brought together key stakeholders to pass Alhambra’s first Project Labor Agreement, hire social workers and mental health professionals to join the city’s public safety team, and create Alhambra’s first-ever sustainability plan.
Councilwoman Pérez was honored as Congressional Woman of the Year by Congresswoman Judy Chu in 2022 and Active SGV’s Outstanding Elected Official in 2021.
Councilwoman Pérez is a Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) commissioner appointed by Supervisor Hilda Solis. She was selected for the California 100 Commission and serves as a board member for the Asian Youth Center, a non-profit dedicated to empowering low-income, immigrant, and at-risk youth.
