Pedestrians navigating a stretch of Allen Avenue to reach the Metro A Line station at the Foothill Freeway overpass will get additional protection starting in September when the city begins installing safety improvements between Walnut Street and Corson Street.
The six-month construction project, awarded June 12, addresses longstanding safety concerns along the key north-south corridor where high pedestrian demand has outpaced existing infrastructure.
In collaboration with Pasadena’s Department of Transportation, the city’s Public Worls Department will oversee comprehensive upgrades designed to shorten dangerous crossing distances and calm traffic near the busy transit station.
Director of Public Works Greg de Vinck said the improvements support the city’s broader efforts to promote transit-oriented development and reduce reliance on cars.
Construction crews will widen sidewalks north of Walnut Street and install a pedestrian hybrid beacon at Locust Street to accommodate high pedestrian demand and provide a controlled crossing point.
The project also includes building curb extensions and bulb-outs that will shorten pedestrian crossing distances while improving visibility for both walkers and drivers.
Traffic signal hardware at existing intersections will receive upgrades, while new pavement striping and signage modifications will support traffic calming efforts.
The Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program and Metro’s 2018 Sustainable Communities Program provide primary funding, with additional support from Pasadena’s Traffic Reduction Fee.
Construction will run through February 2026, with work phased to minimize disruptions.
At least one travel lane will remain open in each direction throughout construction, and access to adjacent properties will be maintained at all times.
