When people hear of electric bikes, the usual thought is that of motorcycles with electric motors, maybe with the option to shut the motor down and pedal instead. However, electric bikes are far from being electrified motorcycles, by keeping its pedal pushing ways intact.

Keith Stephens of Brio Electric Bikes says that electric bikes are bicycles with a small electric motor and battery to assist your pedaling. It doesn’t replace pedaling, instead it makes pedaling easier while you move faster. Hills are much easier to climb and headwinds are no problem.

Electric bikes are perfect for riders who are not strong enough to cycle our city’s hills and for commuters looking to cut fuel expenses. With an electric bike, your “fuel” cost is a 10 cent battery charge every 25 miles. You get some exercise, but not a sweat-drenched workout, allowing you to wear your street or work clothes.

Brio has e-bikes in many styles and sizes, from Beach Cruisers to traditional European bikes with fenders and lights. The first bike most people look at when they enter the shop is the eZIP Tri-Ride. The Tri-Ride is an adult three-wheeler with a huge cargo basket, wide seat with a back rest, and a low step-through frame. The basket can fold down flat to carry boxes or other odd-shaped cargo. It is powered by a 500-watt motor that can climb most hills in the area, yet is governed to 12 mph for “safe and sane” riding. Charge the battery overnight, and travel about 15 miles without pedaling. It is a popular model for seniors, though “green” urbanites are using them as utility vehicles.

”Brio only sells established brands of electric bikes who stock replacement parts,” notes Stephens. “We service what we sell, so you know your bike will still be working years from now.”
