In response to the devastating Eaton Fire in Southern California, Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley has launched initiatives to help residents process trauma and rebuild their emotional well-being.

The organization will host a virtual workshop, “Recovering and Reconnecting – Processing the Aftermath of the Eaton Fire,” on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 12:30 p.m., addressing the psychological impact of the recent wildfires.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist Jay Wagener, who brings over 40 years of experience and serves on the Cancer Support Community Board, will lead the workshop focusing on grief processing and survivor’s guilt.

“Studies show that healing in a community setting significantly enhances recovery and improves quality of life,” a statement from the organization said. “Cancer Support Community is honored to serve as a cornerstone of hope and healing as our community continues to recover – from wildfires, cancer and beyond. Together, we are stronger, and together, we heal.”

The organization provides comprehensive services including individual and group counseling, healthy lifestyle classes, social activities, resources and referrals, along with art-centered workshops in watercolor painting, photography, crafting and collage.

When supporting those coping with grief from cancer or natural disasters, the organization emphasizes mindful communication. They advise against saying “It will be okay,” “At least you’re safe; it could have been worse,” or “It’s time to move on.”

Instead, Cancer Support Community recommends supportive statements such as “I’m here for you,” “It’s okay to feel this way,” and “How can I support you right now?”

In a related initiative, the Baldwin Avenue Gallery will showcase “Beyond the Diagnosis: Art for Hope and Healing,” featuring artwork from program participants, with an opening reception on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. in Sierra Madre.

The exhibition will display various artistic mediums, including paintings, sculptures, and photography through Saturday, Feb. 22, with proceeds benefiting Cancer Support Community’s free support services and educational programs. Admission to the exhibit is free.

Founded in 1990, Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley provides evidence-based support services and professionally led psychosocial activities to enhance medical outcomes for cancer patients and their families.
