City Begins Process of Placing Security Cameras in Several Parks

The city has taken the first steps towards installing security cameras in several local parks.

According to a memo by the city’s Chief Information Officer Phillip Leclair, the cameras will be placed at Villa Parke, Robinson and La Pintoresca parks and at Jackie Robinson Community Center.

Last month, security officials announced they were considering funding home security video cameras in high crime areas to further enhance the ability of the police to combat gun violence.

The idea was originally put forth by Councilmember Tyron Hampton, who said the cameras would hopefully help to deter criminals and give residents another tool to use in conjunction with calling the police department when reporting incidents.

So far the city has completed the vendor review process in the purchase of the cameras.

It is estimated that the cameras will be deployed in Villa Parke in May.

Cameras in Robinson Park are expected to go online in August.

In September and November, the cameras will be up at the Jackie Robinson Community Center and La Pintoresca Park, respectively.

Completion dates may be adjusted based on purchasing, contracting, vendor availability and equipment delivery lead times, city officials said.

Last week, the city’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection triangulation system was activated, making Pasadena the first city in Los Angeles County to use the gun detection system.

Last October, the City Council approved the $640,000 three-year contract for the use of the Shotspotter system.

The security enhancements are funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

  • Don’t you think that the criminal element will just move to the other parks to commit their crimes? They understand there will be no camera’s watching them. I think all the parks should have camera’s and not show discrimination for the other citizen’s safety.
