Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s Emmy-winning Chief Medical Correspondent and practicing neurosurgeon, will deliver a public lecture at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 7:30 p.m.
In his book “World War C,” Gupta argues that “societies must learn from COVID-19 and develop systems that prioritize rapid response, early warning, and effective risk communication.” His dual expertise positions the event at the intersection of journalism, science, and health policy.
The event will address five key areas: pandemic preparedness, combating health misinformation, healthcare equity, preventive medicine, and the ethics of balancing medicine with journalism. Gupta has publicly warned of dangers posed by misinformation during health crises and supports “transparent, open communication and scientific humility to regain public trust.”
On healthcare equity, Gupta highlights “the need for equitable healthcare solutions” and supports “community-based care models and culturally competent communication to bridge the healthcare gap.” His presentation will also explore the ethical complexities he has encountered, such as “when he performed surgery while reporting in disaster zones.” These experiences highlight tensions between “conflicts of interest, journalistic neutrality, and medical responsibility.”
Dr. Gupta, who earned undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan followed by a neurosurgery residency and fellowship at Semmes-Murphey Clinic, currently serves as Associate Chief of Neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine. Since joining CNN in 2001, he has covered major global health crises, earning multiple Emmy Awards for translating complex medical developments into accessible public information.
The Distinguished Speaker Series organizersa said selected Dr. Gupta for his ability to address pressing contemporary social issues through discussion of public health. The event will include opportunities for audience Q&A, making it highly participatory and accessible to diverse attendees including public health-conscious residents, civic and policy-involved voters, healthcare professionals, medical students, and journalism scholars.
