Multiple local organizations will gather on the steps of Pasadena City Hall Monday evening, March 31, for a community solidarity rally supporting migrant protections and inclusion.
The event, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., is organized by the Pasadena NAACP, National Day Laborer Organizing Network, Pasadenans Organizing for Progress (POP!), Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), Pasadena Community Job Center, and the Clergy Community Coalition.
According to the announcement, the gathering aims to honor César Chávez Day and promote unity.
“Unity in diversity is our strength,” said the coalition’s statement attributed to Brandon D. Lamar as President of the Pasadena NAACP. “Now more than ever, we must unite to amplify voices, demand protections, and build a stronger, more inclusive community.”
The participating organizations have histories of supporting immigrant rights and inclusion.
CHIRLA, founded in 1986, provides legal services including asylum applications and representation in immigration courts. The organization has assisted over 3,200 migrants through its “LA Welcomes Collective,” offering food, shelter, health assessments, and family reunification services.
The Pasadena Community Job Center connects immigrant workers with employers and offers vocational English courses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it served as a hub for food distribution, COVID testing, and vaccination services for immigrant workers.
While primarily focused on racial justice for African Americans, the NAACP Pasadena Branch has collaborated on broader social justice initiatives that include immigrant rights, partnering with other organizations in programs supporting workers’ rights and immigrant inclusion.
POP! has worked to make Pasadena a sanctuary city and donated $5,000 to the National Day Laborer Organizing Network’s Immigrant Worker Safety Net Fund during the pandemic to assist day laborers and low-wage immigrant workers facing economic hardship.
The public is invited to attend and bring friends, family and neighbors to the event.
