In a move to raise public awareness about pressing social concerns, Pasadena city leaders have designated October as a month to focus on three key issues: employing people with disabilities, keeping pedestrians safe, and combating domestic violence.

At a City Council meeting on Monday night, Mayor Victor Gordo officially recognized these causes, sending a clear message about the city’s priorities.

The Council officially recognized October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Pedestrian Safety Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Mayor Victor Gordo presented proclamations for each cause, underscoring the city’s commitment to inclusivity, safety and combating domestic abuse.

“Pasadena’s been a leader in issues of disability and employment, particularly providing opportunities for our people in the abled community to be able to have employment,” Mayor Gordo said. He thanked private sector employers for offering job opportunities to disabled community members.

Acting Accessibility Coordinator Marina Ovanessian emphasized the importance of inclusive workplaces.

“When individuals with disability are given the chance to contribute their skills, we all benefit from diverse perspectives and talents that enhance creativity and problem solving,” she said.

The Pasadena Civitan Club was recognized for its efforts in supporting employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The club hosts an annual “Hire Up Pasadena” event to honor outstanding employers.

The Council also recognized October as Pedestrian Safety Month, with Mayor Gordo urging residents to “rededicate ourselves to enjoying the benefits of walking and ensuring the safety of pedestrians in our community.”

Joaquin Siques, announced 18 free events promoting walking in Pasadena this month. The events range from historic tours to nature walks, aiming to encourage healthy and environmentally friendly transportation. The city also highlighted its community compost hubs as part of its environmental initiatives.

In a more somber proclamation, the council declared October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Mayor Gordo highlighted disturbing statistics, noting that “nearly one in three women and one in four men in our country have suffered the physical violence of an intimate partner.”

City Attorney Michele Beal Bagneris accepted the proclamation, emphasizing collaboration with local service providers like Shepherd’s Door and the Pasadena Police Department to support victims and prevent further abuse.

Mayor Gordo requested assistance in helping Shepherd’s Door acquire a van for transporting domestic violence victims, highlighting the organization’s current reliance on personal vehicles.

These proclamations reflect Pasadena’s ongoing commitment to addressing key social issues and fostering a more inclusive, safe and supportive community for all residents.
