Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger addressed local homelessness Wednesday by presenting a substantial contribution to Friends In Deed, a longstanding non-profit organization known for its work in supporting unhoused and at-risk individuals in the Pasadena area.

In a statement, Barger said she is a “proud supporter” of Friends In Deed, which has shown unwavering determination in reaching and serving some of the community’s most vulnerable individuals, with a special emphasis on women.

“Helping our homeless is no easy task, but the team at Friends In Deed is passionate about their work and it shows,” Barger said. “I’m gladly contributing $200,000 to their cause today. Our county can accelerate efforts that lift individuals off our streets through partnerships with effective and committed non-profits. Friends In Deed is a clear example of that.”

Friends In Deed, founded in Pasadena in 1894, operates as a non-profit interfaith social services agency with a core mission to reduce and prevent homelessness and alleviate the effects of poverty among the community’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Our team has been working harder than ever to provide for those experiencing homelessness in the Pasadena area, as well as working to prevent more people from finding themselves unhoused,” Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater, Friends In Deed’s Executive Director, said. “This generous funding from Supervisor Barger is especially useful now, as we are seeing the need across every program at all-time highs. This support enables us to stay flexible to support those who need our help most.”

Barger has been serving as a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the 5th District, which includes Pasadena, since 2016.

Friends In Deed’s community programs include a Food Pantry, The Women’s Room (a day shelter for homeless and at-risk women), street outreach and housing, bad weather shelter and supplies, and eviction prevention and rental assistance. The organization aims to provide compassion, connection, and dignity to all clients experiencing challenging times in their lives when assistance is most needed.
