Cinco de Mayo was celebrated at the Pasadena Senior Center on Tuesday with a colorful performance by the Ballet Folklorico Xotziquetzalli in the Center’s Auditorium after a Mexican lunch before a crowd of about 65 onlookers.
Ballet Director Ana Marie Chavelas said the 12 student performers, some as young as five years of age, performed three dances from three different states of Mexico, Sinaloa, Chiapas and Veracruz.
Chavelas explained that Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
“It’s a great opportunity to celebrate!” Chavelas said.
The program mixed dances with brief comments about the dance groups and the dress and cultural heritage of el Cinco de Mayo.
