DMV Launches Online Portal to Streamline Hearings and License Reinstatement

New system aims to reduce the need for in-person visits

The California Department of Motor Vehicles has introduced a new online case management system, offering drivers and their attorneys a more efficient way to handle driver safety issues. The system allows users to request hearings, check case statuses, and review requirements for reinstating suspended licenses without having to visit DMV offices.

“This latest online DMV service makes it much easier for customers to work through their driver safety issues without having to leave their home,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said. “This online system makes the DMV more accessible and streamlined.”

The initiative comes in response to high demand, with the Department of Motor Vehicles receiving approximately 30,000 calls monthly related to driver safety issues. Of these, about 14,000 are requests for hearings.

The system caters to drivers whose licenses have been suspended due to various infractions, including driving under the influence, accumulating excessive negligent driving points, or experiencing mental or physical conditions affecting driving abilities.

DMV defines driving under the influence as operating a vehicle with alcohol or other substances in one’s system. The Negligent Operator Treatment System (NOTS) applies to drivers 18 and older, issuing warnings and penalties based on accumulated points. Younger “provisional” drivers are also included in the NOTS program if they violate provisional probation or suspension.

For drivers with deteriorating skills due to mental or physical conditions, DMV offers a process for concerned individuals to report potentially unsafe drivers for review.

To access the new online system, users must log into their MyDMV accounts at www.dmv.ca.gov/driversafety. DMV encourages customers to utilize online services for various transactions, including eligible driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals, to reduce in-person visits.

The agency also promotes its paperless vehicle registration and driver’s license renewal notices, available through MyDMV accounts. These initiatives align with DMV’s broader efforts to digitize services and improve accessibility for California residents.

For those needing in-person services in Pasadena, the local DMV field office is located at 49 S. Rosemead Blvd., with phone support available at (800) 777-0133.
