I recently googled the definition of “father.” Here is what I found:
Father: a man in relation to his child or children.
After reading this definition, I realized that there was a lot missing. So, I’d like to add to it by sharing some things about my father, my grandfather, and my father-in-law.
My father has taught me so many valuable lessons. He constantly inspires me to be better. Anything I’ve ever shown interest in, my father helped me identify the pros and cons and offered guidance on how to be successful with whatever it is. He taught me drive, passion, and an impeccable work ethic. To this day, I watch my father, as a business owner, pour into his community with his hard work and money.
Over the years, he has supported our school district and local nonprofits.
“Moving out of your neighborhood is not the definition of success. Lifting up your neighborhood is true success.”
He has encouraged so many people to forge their own paths and become entrepreneurs.
“If there’s not a way, you create it.”
People often ask me why I got involved in politics. I believe the way my dad engaged in our community is what inspired me to find a way to serve our city. It was because of his examples. He was one of my biggest inspirations to run for political office.
He showed me the true definition of hard work. At the age of 75, he can outwork most people in their 20s.
He has taught me the ability to forgive and not hold grudges.
“The only thing we can control is ourselves.”Holding grudges is not healthy so, “Let go and let God.”
There’s so much more I could share about my father.
If there was one thing my father instilled in me, it is to be better tomorrow than you were the day before.
My grandfather encouraged me to talk to everyone and anyone. He told me to go out into the world with a positive mindset knowing that I can accomplish whatever I tell myself I can. He always reminded me that, “We have to encourage ourselves.”
My father-in-law is a bit of a renaissance man — a veteran, a nursery owner, a renowned pigeon breeder, and a retired public school teacher. The life lesson I have learned from him is challenging yet simple: “create.” Whether it be art, music, writing a plan, etc., whenever you find that inspiration, stop what you’re doing and create.
Today we celebrate the love, guidance, and support that fathers provide to their children. You are the role models, mentors, and heroes that shape the lives of your kids. Your hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed.
Whether you are a biological father, stepfather, adoptive father, or father figure, you make a difference in the lives of those around you.
Thank you for all that you do, and may this Father’s Day be filled with love, joy, and appreciation for all that you are. Father’s Day may not be the most celebrated day in America, but the significance a father has in one’s life is invaluable. Strive to improve yourself every day and be better than you were yesterday. Encourage yourself and others, and when inspiration comes, create.
Happy Father’s Day!
