At 6:14 a.m. living room fire in the 3800 block of Valley Lights in Hastings Ranch that was quickly extinguished by residents this morning serves a reminder to all Pasadenans of the effectiveness of simple home safety measures.
“This situation could have been a lot worse should safety factors not have been in place such as smoke detectors, fire extinguisher and ventilation,†says Lisa Derderian, Pasadena Fire Department spokesperson.
Responding to the scene, Pasadena Fire Dept. personnel saw moderate smoke was coming from the front door of the residence and a large upholstered chair that was smoldering. They noticed significant heat in the living room area. A melted electrical charger plugged into the wall, adjacent to the chair, was the source of heat and subsequent fire. The charger had been used for an exercise bike, Derderian reports.
Smoke detectors woke the residents who saw fire coming from the living room chair. They quickly put out the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher and opened all doors and windows to ventilate.
Fortunately the residence sustained minimal smoke and contents damage, authorities say.
