Harambee Ministries will host an open mic night on Sunday, July 26, at 6 p.m. at its center at 1609 Navarro Ave. in Northwest Pasadena, according to Councilmember Tyron Hampton.
The evening is presented by the ministry’s Youth Rebuild Fellowship Program and will feature spoken word, poetry, live performances and storytelling. It was described as a community invitation to celebrate local voices and connect with neighbors in a space dedicated to rebuilding and uplifting the community.
Harambee Ministries has served a 12-block target area of Northwest Pasadena for more than 40 years from its center at Howard Street and Navarro Avenue. The organization’s name comes from a Swahili phrase meaning, roughly, let us get together and push.
Its programs include the tuition-free Harambee BEE Program, which provides academic tutoring to scholars ages 6 to 17 in partnership with Pasadena Unified School District families, along with Harambee Performing Arts and a high school program in music, film, fashion and entrepreneurship.
The center can be reached at (626) 798-7431.
