Post 283 of the American Legion is calling for community volunteers to help decorate the Army’s float for the 2024 Rose Bowl Parade commemorating the military branch’s 250th anniversary. The float, titled “This We’ll Defend: 250 Years of Service,” will showcase the Army’s history and achievements through a powerful timeline of service.

“This is a unique chance to be part of an iconic American tradition while honoring the legacy of one of the nation’s oldest institutions,” states the American Legion’s volunteer announcement.

Established on June 14, 1775, the United States Army is commemorating its milestone anniversary with various events and campaigns planned throughout 2024 and 2025.

Volunteers are needed to assist in assembling and adorning the float with flowers and other natural elements at the Pasadena assembly warehouse. Participants will join teams working to bring the float to life with vibrant floral displays during available decorating shifts on December 7, 29, and 30.

The float design features a timeline of service beginning with a resolute statue of George Washington, commemorating his 1775 appointment and leadership of the Continental Army. Washington’s leadership secured America’s victory at Yorktown and independence in 1781. The timeline continues through monumental moments of Army history along a bed of black and gold florals representing the official Army colors. According to the Army Institute of Heraldry, black symbolizes knowledge and jurisprudence, while gold symbolizes achievement and honor.

The United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, dressed in Revolutionary War uniforms, will lead the procession playing patriotic melodies. Outwalkers in uniforms from different eras will accompany the float, representing the Army’s diversity and resilience throughout its history. This touching tribute captures the Army’s evolution while honoring its steadfast motto, “This We’ll Defend,” as a reminder of the courage and dedication of the men and women who serve.
