In Drought-Strapped South Pasadena, High School Pool Draining Leads to “Free Water Giveaway”

A view of the South Pasadena High School pool prior to renovation construction expected to last two months.

A resource that’s hard to come by these days will be given away free on Saturday morning at the South Pasadena High Aquatics’ Center. Water, if you haven’t heard, is a precious commodity, especially in these parts of the state, and will be given away at no charge on Saturday morning.

The pool at 1527 Diamond Avenue in South Pasadena will be under reconstruction starting on Monday through July 3 and, as a result, will be emptied next week.

Should you need some water for your yard, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Dave Lubs says the time couldn’t be any better for citizens to stop by on May 16 between 8 to10 a.m. and pick up water.

He invites the public to bring buckets and containers, seal up the water, then bring as much as possible home.

“While the water will be considered potable (chlorine will have been counteracted), it is highly recommended that the water be used for garden watering,” said Lubs in statement. “Drinking the water is not recommended. Thank you for helping us reuse as much water as possible.”

He invites the public to bring buckets and containers, seal them up securely with water, and use it at home.

Re-plastering, installing new tile and a new concrete deck, along with other cosmetic upgrades, will be part on the major project.
For questions, call Lubs at (626) 441-5810.
