Pasadena’s Lake Avenue has undergone a significant transformation with the completion of a pedestrian access improvement project in early August, City officials said.

The project, which began in October 2023 and wrapped on August 2, is intended to enhance the pedestrian experience along the bustling corridor.

The Pasadena Department of Public Works announced the completion of the project, which spans from the Metro Station at the 210 Freeway south to California Boulevard.

Acting Director of Public Works Kris Markarian said the Department is pleased with the outcome.

The improvements connect the Metro A Line to residential, business, and commercial areas along Lake Avenue. The project incorporated complete streets elements to enhance overall pedestrian experience.

Several key enhancements were introduced to improve safety and accessibility. Sixty-five pedestrian-scale street lights were installed, complementing the existing high-mast lighting to boost visibility for those on foot.

Two new mid-block traffic signals were added to provide safer crossings for pedestrians. The project also eliminated the “pork chop” island at Union Street, effectively reducing the distance pedestrians must traverse when crossing.

Transit users will benefit from a widened sidewalk on the east side of Lake Avenue north of Colorado Boulevard. This improvement facilitates transit boarding and alighting for public transportation passengers.

Corner extensions and reconstructed accessible ramps were built to improve pedestrian movements at the new traffic signals and the Del Mar Boulevard intersection. These changes aim to enhance overall walkability in the area.

Funding for the Lake Avenue improvements came through the Metro 2015 Call for Projects. The city partnered with local organizations throughout the project’s phases.

“Many thanks to South Lake Business Association, Playhouse Village, and many businesses along the project corridor for partnering with the City of Pasadena through the planning, design, and construction coordination,” said a statement from the Public Works department.
