The League of Women Voters Pasadena Area plans to host an educational forum examining the Electoral College’s influence on U.S. presidential elections. The event, scheduled for November 23, aims to explore the system’s structure and its effects on voter representation across states.

Caroline Heldman, Department Chair of Gender, Women, & Sexuality at Occidental College and Executive Director of the Representation Project, will lead the discussion.

A seasoned political activist, campaign manager, CNN commentator, and author of several books, Heldman brings extensive expertise in politics and electoral processes to what organizers describe as “an informative and challenging morning.”

The forum comes amid ongoing national discourse about the Electoral College system, which has resulted in five presidents winning office despite losing the popular vote. The discussion will address how “we are continually bombarded by news of the important voters in ‘swing states'” and why “national polls have become less important than the local and state-centered polls.”

Key questions to be addressed include: “What is the Electoral College? How many members are there? How was that decided? What is their job? Is it a good way to ensure equal representation of both large and small states, both rural and urban populations, all voters equally?”

Following Heldman’s presentation, attendees will participate in a focused discussion on the National League’s advocacy efforts toward changing the Electoral College’s impact. The event reflects the organization’s commitment to voter education and electoral system analysis.

The two-hour forum will take place at Maxwell House in the Western Justice Center, located at 55 Grand Avenue, Pasadena, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Light refreshments will be available, and donations to cover costs are gratefully accepted.
