Giants Stun Dodgers 5-1, with a 10th Inning Gut Punch; Tanner Scott gives up second game-losing homer to tighten the Dodgers’ pennant battle

The Dodgers had the game where they wanted it Friday night: Yoshinobu Yamamoto spinning strikeouts, the Giants’ lineup subdued, and a chance to push their National League West lead a little further into September. Instead, they walked off Oracle Park with another late-inning wound — and the race behind them growing sharper by the day.

Patrick Bailey’s grand slam in the 10th inning lifted San Francisco to a 5–1 win, sending a sellout crowd into delirium and the Dodgers into a familiar frustration. It was the second time in a week that a gem from Yamamoto was squandered, and the second time the bullpen surrendered the final blow.

The loss slices Los Angeles’s division margin to the quick. The Padres remain within reach, and the Giants, still chasing in the Wild Card race, have life. For a Dodgers team accustomed to grinding through September with relative comfort, the pressure is beginning to mount.

Yamamoto deserved better. He struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing a lone run in the second before locking into the kind of rhythm that has made him a centerpiece of the rotation. At one point he retired 20 of 21 batters, mixing a fastball with bite and a splitter that left Giants hitters flailing. His ERA dipped again, and his night ended with the score tied.

But the Dodgers’ offense never broke through. A solo home run in the seventh tied the game, yet repeated opportunities with men on base evaporated. By the time the game reached extras, Los Angeles had stranded seven runners. Their at-bats grew tentative, and the Giants’ bullpen smelled the hesitation.

That left the Dodgers’ own relievers to decide the outcome. Manager Dave Roberts turned to left-hander Tanner Scott in the 10th. Only six days earlier, Scott had allowed rookie Samuel Basallo to end a game in Baltimore with a walk-off homer. This time the blow was heavier. After a walk to Jung Hoo Lee loaded the bases, Bailey jumped on a 1–0 fastball and deposited it beyond the right-field wall.

Scott dropped his head. Again. Bailey raised his arms. And a rivalry game turned into a playoff-caliber gut punch.
