Mayor Victor Gordo and Councilmember Justin Jones are set to distribute free backpacks filled with school supplies such as pencils and notebooks to K-12 students to ensure they have the tools they need to succeed in school.
The Backpack and School Supplies Giveaway event is happening at Robinson Park today, August 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. Pasadena Unified School District schools open Monday morning.
Aside from backpack and school supplies, each child will also receive a take home box lunch. K-12 students must be present to receive the supplies.
Councilmember Jones, an education advocate, emphasized the importance of supporting students’ educational journeys and promoting their success.
“I know the importance of encouraging children to be all they can be. And so whether it’s giving them school supplies, a backpack, giving them the resources and the tools to succeed is very important to allow them to pursue their dreams and desires and to be anything they want to be in this world,” said Jones.
Jones said providing students with the tools they need is the first step to succeeding in the classroom.
“You don’t have the material, how can you be successful? So it’s showing that your City councilmember, your mayor, they care about the success of these students that live in our community.”
Jones believes the event will not only impact students but also their families.
“Oftentimes parents are looking for help, whether it’s childcare or it’s through school supplies.”
“To know that your City Council, your city is helping provide these supplies for you, I think it goes a long way.”
