Local election season kicks off in less than three weeks on Feb. 9 when the candidate nomination period opens.
Until March 6 candidates and incumbents in Districts 3, 5 and 7 can circulate nomination petitions and gather signatures from registered voters. Paperwork must be filed with the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall by 5 p.m. on March 6 in races where incumbents file.
Currently those seats are held by Justin Jones, Jess Rivas and Jason Lyon.
If an eligible incumbent in any of the three districts does not submit nomination papers by that deadline, the filing period for that seat will be extended to 5 p.m. March 11 for non-incumbent candidates.
The filing period for write-in candidates runs from April 6 through May 19.
The City Clerk’s Office will host two candidate workshops to review filing requirements, election procedures and campaign regulations.
The first is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Feb. 9, with a second session to be held at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 both at City Hall. Nomination petitions will be available at both workshops.
The campaign’s large contribution and expenditure reporting period opens March 4, 90 days before the election. During that period, candidates must file disclosure reports within 24 hours of receiving contributions of $1,000 or more from a single source.
The first pre-election campaign finance statement, covering activity from Jan. 1 through April 18, is due April 23. A second pre-election statement, covering April 19 through May 16, is due May 21.
Los Angeles County is scheduled to begin issuing vote-by-mail ballots May 4. The deadline to register to vote is May 18, though same-day registration will be available at County vote centers.
In-person voting at designated vote centers will begin May 23 and continue through Election Day, June 2. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
