Pasadena City College interim men’s basketball head coach Spenser Nunes wanted his student-athletes to understand the role that first responders have today as well as honoring those that lost their lives many years ago on this the anniversary of 9/11. So today, his Lancers made a special visit to Los Angeles Fire Department Station 47.

During the visit, the team distributed bagels/treats, handed out PCC basketball gear, and presented a framed signed poem about 9/11 to the station’s crew.

A PCC connection to the visit was the fact that sophomore Donovan Ford’s father happens to be the captain of Station 47-Ephfriam Ford.

“Visiting the fire station on 9/11 gave us a chance to honor those who sacrifice for us and to honor those we lost 24 years ago,” Nunes said. “I wanted our guys to see that sacrifice and teamwork are bigger than basketball. They got to witness how true leadership means putting others first and working together toward something greater than yourself.”

The coach and players were able to ask questions and talk about the experiences of life as a first responder with Captain Ford and the rest of the station crew including engineer Hector Estrada, firefighter/paramedics Mark Moyer and Michael Conway, along with fellow firefighters Joshua Jones and Christian Guzman.

Nunes also thanks the PCC equipment staff of Erick Valadez and Ryan Cardona for their help in providing polo shirts for the station’s members.
